Howard joined the Norman Foster Hong Kong Office to work on the Design and construction of the new HQ of the Hong Kong Shanghai Bank, working initially on establishing a coordination team exploring all the interfaces of all the various “packages” of work.
After 8 years working for Norman Foster, Howard won a commission for an eco-tourist village in Malta for the Gatt Brothers. He soon left the Foster office to set up Howard Gilby Architects and later Green9. He worked on a variety of competitions, community projects, and the prestigious commission to explore the Complete circuit of the City walls in Chester for Chester City Council.
Meanwhile, Howard taught and lectured at various Architectural schools in London, Manchester and Birmingham. After that, he accepted a full time post at the University of Greenwich when he was being offered.
Throughout his 20 years of Academic work, Howard has continued to practice as GREen9 within GREENWORKS in Central London. By collaborating with different architects and companies, such as Battle McCarthy Ltd., Consulting engineers and landscape Architects, Fat Sumo (BIM specialists) and Schumann Consult (specification specialists), Howard had worked on a variety of projects at a variety of scales.
His projects mainly involve a particular focus on sustainable strategies, integrating bio-technologies into the infrastructure of buildings, neighborhoods and cities. Eventually, Howard developed a particular interest and expertise in bridging the gap between practice, business, education (all ages) and communities to ensure the sustainability of all projects.
